Oncology nurses are not much required and in demand until 1970s. Before, the medical treatment being given to cancer patients is only through surgery that is why oncology nurses' medical contribution is very limited. All this have changed however when the treatment methods evolved to radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Dedicatedly, oncology nurses have gone through specialized trainings and programs in order to give response to the needs of cancer patients, cancer survivors, and those who have the possibility to develop cancer. Moreover, oncology nurses are given the task to give lectures about cancers so as it can be prevented. Through the years, the rate of cancer survival has successfully improved, and oncology nurses have given great respect for they are practicing professionalism and doing well in contributing something to their society and community.

In addition to that, oncology nurses do thorough research as well to be able to find out things that can affect the treatment of cancer. Oncology nurses have to be vigilant at all times in order for them to distinguish what could appear to be obstacles or hindrances in their objective -- to give treatment are proper care to cancer patients. Furthermore, one of the major concerns of oncology nurses is to be able to provide an environment that is conducive for all.

Oncology nurses can deliberately focus on breast oncology, radiation, chemotherapy, GYN oncology, palliative care, prevention or early detection, and bone marrow transplant if they want. This field of nursing is so diverse and broad that is why nurses are given the chance to specialize on a specific area or concern.

Oncology nursing needs to be practiced by those who have both enough cancer knowledge and background and those who have clinical practices in cancer care. Cancer is something serious that needs to be handled by nurses who are experienced enough to do so.
